Karun Phosphate Company, owned by Parsian Chemical Industries Holding, was selected as the leader and executor of the Potash Khor and Biabanak complex for 25 years in 2018 after concluding a contract with the Iranian Mines and Mineral Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO).
The Potash Khor and Biabanak complex is the first producer of potassium chloride (KCl) in Iran. This complex is located in the central plains of Iran, 450 kilometers east of the center of Isfahan province and 30 kilometers from Khorubiabank city, and has been put into operation with the aim of producing 100,000 tons of potassium chloride annually.
Currently, the annual production of this complex is 60,000 tons of potassium chloride as the main product, and the company plans to achieve the production of 100,000 tons of potassium chloride by 1408. Also, 2 million tons of industrial sodium chloride (table salt) are produced as an intermediate product.
Process: The Khur and Torud beaches, with an area of approximately 2250 square kilometers, are located in the lowest area of the Khur city basin. As a result of the inflow and evaporation of surface and groundwater and sedimentation over several thousand years, a porous salt crust with an area of 1300 square kilometers and a thickness of more than 8 meters has been formed. Within it, there are about two billion cubic meters of brine with a salinity of 320 grams per liter, which includes various valuable salts. By constructing channels and using a pumping station, the mineral of this beach, called brine, reaches the salting pools with an area of 8 million square meters. After a large percentage of the brine salt has settled and the mineral water has evaporated, the brine is pumped to the carnallite pools so that the carnallite, which contains a large amount of potash, can be deposited. Then the settled carnallite is collected and taken to the Khur and Biabanak Potash Plant located 30 kilometers from Khur and Biabanak. In the plant, potassium chloride is obtained from carnallite as the main product by carrying out processes.
Considering the vastness of the mines for the extraction of carnallite and the potassium chloride purification unit, the Khur and Biabanak Potash Complex requires a lot of manpower and currently 400 direct jobs and 1000 indirect jobs have been created in Khur and Biabanak.
Also, Parsian Chemical Industries Company, by constructing a 40,000-ton granulation unit in the Khur and Biabanak Potash Complex, has been able to make the consumption of produced potassium chloride easier for farmers.
Also, this company intends to complete the fertilizer and potassium product chain by constructing a 20,000-ton potassium sulfate (SOP) unit in the Khur and Biabanak Potash Complex.
